The Philharmonic-Symphony Society of New York put on a concert at Carnegie Hall on January 21st, 1937 and on January 22nd, 1937. Looking through the program for the concert, something I found interesting is that it states the performance was under direction of Igor Stravinsky the Guest Conductor-Composer. I wanted to mention this because I know for me personally, it is hard for me to forget that great composers like Stravinsky were alive not too long ago. I think it’s wonderful to know that Stravinsky conducted a concert of music he created at Carnegie Hall.

One of the works performed at this concert was suite from “The Fire-Bird” by Stravinsky. The music was composed for a ballet and when this piece premiered, it was an immediate success. The piece was a breakthrough for him and lead to many other great compositions. The program for the concert gives brief information on the composition of the music. Following that, there is also a short synopsis of the ballet story. This was the last piece of the concert performed.

Before this piece but after the intermission, “The Rite of Spring” was performed. From what I can see in the program, the entirety of the piece was performed at this concert. There is also a brief description of this piece and also the story of the premiere of the composition and ballet. Mentioning the uproar that took place during the premiere. I am curious why these two pieces were chosen to be performed together post intermission?
