This semester, I took a class on Frank Sinatra and his music. I really enjoyed the class and learned a lot on the amazing and talented singer. This is why I wanted to write about the premiere of one of the songs he sung. The song I chose is titled “Lucky be a Lady”. This song sung by Sinatra first premiered on the album “Reprise Musical Repertory Theatre” which was a compilation album comprised of various songs from different artists. This piece became one of Sinatra's go to songs to sing.

This song is important because of the deeper meaning it has with Frank Sinatra. The song “Luck be a Lady” is, like most of the songs he sung about, referring to romance and a woman. However, the piece is also about luck and gambling. Sinatra enjoyed going to Las Vegas and gambling. There was a part of him that felt like he was doing something illegal and dangerous by gambling. So he continued to do so. It is also no secret that many felt he was involved in illegal activities. This includes everything from working with the mafia to being involved in anti-American, communist activities. I feel this song shares with everyone that part of his life. Below is one of the many FBI files on Frank Sinatra.

Other than sharing the fascinating history of Frank Sinatra's life involving potential crime and harmless gambling, this song by itself is also a wonderful piece. To me, this piece is a great example of the classic jazz that people think of when talking about Sinatra. There is a slow and melodic introduction to the song. Then the tempo picks up and the whole band joins in. It is a fun and upbeat song that can easily be danced too. It is a popular song that most associate with Frank Sinatra and it is an excellent part of history.
